Terms of Service
01
What this is
BetterPrivacy is a free, open-source BetterDiscord plugin that encrypts Discord messages and files on your device, plus this website, which hosts the plugin and a client-side decrypt page. By downloading, installing, or using either, you accept these terms. If you don't accept them, don't use it.
02
An independent project
BetterPrivacy is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Discord Inc. or the BetterDiscord project. "Discord" is a trademark of Discord Inc.
03
It breaks Discord's rules
Client modifications — including BetterDiscord, and therefore BetterPrivacy — violate Discord's Terms of Service. Discord can suspend or terminate accounts for it, at any time, without warning. That risk is entirely yours. Don't use it on an account you can't afford to lose.
04
No warranty
The plugin and the website are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied — including fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. Encryption software can contain defects. A Discord update can break the plugin at any moment.
05
No liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the author and contributors are liable for nothing arising from your use of — or inability to use — the plugin or the website: not for lost, corrupted, undeliverable or exposed messages and files; not for suspended or banned accounts; not for disclosed secrets; not for damages of any kind, direct, indirect, incidental, consequential or otherwise, even if advised of the possibility. Your entire remedy is to stop using the software.
06
Security is a bet, not a promise
BetterPrivacy uses standard cryptography (AES-256-GCM, PBKDF2), but no software makes data unbreakable. The secret phrase is the entire protection: a weak, reused or carelessly shared phrase undoes everything. Anyone who has the phrase can read everything encrypted with it, forever. A forgotten phrase is unrecoverable — by design, nobody can restore it, including us.
07
Your responsibilities
You choose the phrases and who receives them. You are responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you — including laws restricting encryption, which differ by country — and for what you encrypt and send. Don't use BetterPrivacy for anything illegal.
08
The website
betterprivacy.app has no accounts, no analytics, and no server-side decryption; encrypted payloads travel in the URL fragment, which browsers do not send to servers. Even so, the site comes with no availability guarantee and may change or disappear at any time.
09
Open source
The code is licensed under the MIT License. These terms govern your use of the software and the site; the license governs the code. Where they conflict about the code, the license wins.
10
Changes
These terms may change with any release. The version published here is the one that applies. Continuing to use the plugin after a change means you accept it.
